JOB PURPOSE
The Training and Education Nutritionist, under the general direction of the Director, Nutrition and Dietetics Unit, plans, organizes and conducts training and education programmes in Nutrition and Dietetics for Nutrition& Dietetic staff, Dietetic/Nutrition Interns, Nursing students, other health personnel and agencies.
KEY OUTPUT
- General Management of the Training and Education activities
- Surveying training needs of members of the health team and the Nutrition and Dietetic staff
- Planning, organizing and implementing training programmes;
- Coordinating curriculum development and production of training materials for pre-service/in-service training of health personnel;
- Responding to public requests for information and education materials; and
- Serving as the central programme director of the National Nutrition Education Programme; developing the Nutrition Education Strategy; assisting in design and production of education materials and mass communication programmes; formulating long-term plans, monitoring and evaluating programme performance.
Key responsibility areas
- Provides leadership in the formulation and implementation of National food and Nutrition Policies and Strategies
- Prepares and manages the operational plan and budget for the Nutrition Unit
- Presents the government’s position on nutritional matters at local, regional and international conferences
- Advises the Chief Medical Officer, the Director, Health Promotion and Protection and other Senior Ministry of Health planners on all matters concerning food and nutrition.
- Participates in the Quarterly and Annual Performance Review, to assess the achievement of the Technical Services Division
- Establishes and maintains beneficial relationships with the National Nutrition Coordinating Committee of Jamaica, the Bureau of Standards, the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute and other related agencies to develop coordinated approaches to the solution of nutritional problems
- Proposes nutrition objectives and priorities and guides the implementation of such objectives in relation to other objectives and development goals of the Ministry of Health
- Develops national strategies and measures relevant to the reduction of malnutrition and nutrition related diseases including obesity, plans nutrition intervention programmes where required.
- Guides the Regional Health Authorities, other Ministries and agencies in the development and implementation and appraisal of nutrition programmes.
- Ensures a coordinated and standardized approach to the implementation of such programmes.
Minimum Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Foods and Nutrition, Nutrition & dietetics or similar course from and accredited University;
- Training Officers Certificate or an equivalent course from an accredited Institution – Plus
- Five (5) years field experience as Nutritionists, plus experience as a trainer
