The Peoples Republic of China ‘Bright Journey’ Medical Mission, to provide cataract surgery and clinical activities during visit to Jamaica

Minister of Health Dr. Fenton Ferguson is pleased to announce the arrival of the ‘Bright Journey’ Medical Mission to Jamaica for the period May 18 – 28, 2015.

“The Ministry of Health welcomes this visit by the ‘Bright Journey’ Medical Mission which is another demonstration of the strong partnership between the Jamaican Government and the People’s Republic of China,” said Dr. Ferguson.

“We are very pleased that the Chinese Government saw it fit to lend us their expertise, which will see a number of people benefiting from cataract surgery among other clinical activities.” he added.

Acting through the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese ophthalmology medical team which comprises of six (6) medical doctors and (2) nurses will be providing free cataract surgical operations and clinical activities as well as to carry out academic exchanges with Jamaican health care personnel.

While in Jamaica, the medical team will be based at the Kingston Public Hospital and expects to perform 200 surgeries.   Selection of patients for surgery is being done by members of the Ministry of Health and the Chinese teams using screening criteria for patients previously reviewed in the health system islandwide.

The Chinese Government will also be donating equipment and supplies for the Ophthalmology Department at the Kingston Public Hospital valued at over US$390,000.

This is the ‘Bright Journey’ Chinese Medical Mission team’s first visit to Jamaica.
