The newly renovated Rowlandsfield Health Centre in St. Thomas marks a total of 130 Health Centres now refurbished under the Primary Health Care Infrastructure Renewal Project. Minister of Health, Dr. Fenton Ferguson highlighted the achievements at the official reopening ceremony held Thursday, September 17, 2015 on the grounds of the Rowlandsfield Health Centre, St. Thomas.
Dr. Ferguson said, “the government of Jamaica is committed to improving health care for its people especially for the most vulnerable and today marks another milestone for the community of Rowlandsfield as this improvement will significantly enhance the way in which persons living in the area seek health care.”
He added that over the last three years the health sector has spent $1.5 billion on upgrading hospital infrastructure and $660 million on primary health care.
“For this financial year an additional $460 million will be spent to carry on the work on the upgrading of hospital infrastructure and $322 million on continuing the restoration of primary health care across Jamaica, Dr. Ferguson said.
The Rowlandsfield Health Centre is a Type One facility that offers family planning and maternal and child health. The scope of work included painting, tiling, installation of partitions, electrical installation, plumbing, installation of perimeter fence, roofing, construction of wheelchair ramp and installation of a 1000 gallon water tank.
The European Union through the Sugar Transformation Unit funded the project at a total of Eighteen Million Dollars ($18,000,000.00) to furnish and renovate. The Rural Agricultural Development Association (RADA) also donated the land.
