The Ministry of Health is gearing up to commemorate its annual regional Caribbean Wellness Day (CWD) on September 10, 2016 in Half Way Tree. Celebrated on the second Saturday in September, CWD was created in recognition of the increased prevalence of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases and the burden that they place on the health sector.
Speaking at the recent launch held at the Jamaica Pegasus, Minister of Heath Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton said “we have a strong cause to bring attention to the importance of lifestyle linked to health and I think that show of strength in that busy thoroughfare will send a significant message.” Minister Tufton also said “the Ministry will be focusing on preventative measures to help encourage everyone to make healthier lifestyle choices in terms of physical activity and more balanced diets.”
Caribbean Wellness Day was created to highlight, strengthen or initiate sustainable population based healthy lifestyle initiatives and the partnerships that will make them possible. The annual slogan for CWD is “Love your body; Treat your body right.” The regional theme for this year is Healthy Children in Healthy Environments. Persons are being encouraged to participate in the various health-related activities, which are free, from 11a.m to 5p.m. The activities will include a kiddies’ village, a special cook off competition, health checks, and live performances.
