Minister of Health, Dr. Christopher Tufton will be participating in the second “Operation: Mosquito Search and Destroy” cleanup campaign which will be heading to St. Ann this weekend.
As part of the Ministry of Health’s zika virus preparedness and response activities the cleanup initiative was started first in St. Catherine on Saturday February 22 and will be executed in all fourteen parishes over time.
“The initiative is being done to mobilize and motivate residents to take responsibility by searching for and destroying mosquito breeding sites in and around their homes. Increased fogging in areas with high mosquito breeding also forms part of the Ministry’s overall heightened vector control activities,” Dr. Tufton said.
On Saturday, March 12, 2016 the health team along with several stakeholders will be targeting communities in the Ocho Rios Town Centre as well as Fauklands, Buckfield and Parry Town to search for and destroy mosquito breeding sites in order to decrease the Aedes aegypti population in that area and reduce the possible spread of Zika Virus, Dengue and Chikungunya.
The team will meet at the Ocean Village Shopping Centre, Ocho Rios beginning at 9:00 a.m. for a brief launch and then move to the respective locations.
The Jamaica Defense Force, Jamaica Constabulary Force, National Solid Waste Management Authority and the St. Ann Parish Council are just some of the stakeholders on board for Saturday’s Cleanup.
