Faculty of Medical Sciences Gets Wellness Check-in

Health Ministry Continues #DoYourShare Campaign

KINGSTON, Jamaica. Friday, February 14, 2025: The Ministry of Health & Wellness through its ongoing #DoYourShare Campaign did a Wellness Check-In at the UWI Mona, Faculty of Medical Sciences earlier today.

#DoYourShare prioritises the creation of safe spaces for young people who may be struggling with mental health challenges; and makes available information, education and communication resources on mental wellness. It also includes the donation of a ‘Wellness Bench’ as a symbol for safe spaces and as a tool to promote communication about mental wellness.

“The reality is many people are not aware that they are experiencing mental challenges because there is a stigma attached to it – we want to reduce that stigma. We want not just the students here, at MedSci but everyone to create a safe space and find a safe person – someone you can confide in. Your safe space can be your room, church or even just under a tree,” noted Dr. the Hon. Christopher Tufton, MP, Minister of Health & Wellness while addressing a group of Medical Sciences’ students.

Through the #DoYourShare Campaign, the Mental Health Unit at the Ministry was able to donate a Wellness Bench as a symbol of a safe space. “I am encouraging everyone here to utilise the professional mental health services offered by the Ministry if you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed. We are here to give you the support you need. You can reach us at our U-Matter Chatline for 16-24 years olds that is accessible by texting SUPPORT to 876-838-4897, and via Instagram and Facebook Messenger @ureportjamaica or 888-NEW-LIFE,” the Minister added.
