Health Minister Condemns Attack on Doctor at the Linstead Hospital

Minister of Health, Dr. Fenton Ferguson has condemned the attack on a doctor attached to the Linstead Hospital in St. Catherine. The attack took place on Tuesday, February 17, 2015.

“It is time that all Jamaicans speak out against this kind of behavior towards our health workers. Health workers have given their lives to service to the people and so it cannot be that they are being threatened and assaulted by the very persons who they are trying to care for,” Dr. Ferguson said.

It is reported that the medical doctor was carrying out her duties early Tuesday morning (February 17, 2015) when the mother of a baby who was brought to the facility for care physically attacked her and verbally abused her.

A report on the matter was made to the Linstead police.

“We cannot allow these persons to disrupt services to others and prevent our health workers from carrying out their duties in a safe and comfortable atmosphere. We have to become more vigilant; do not just sit and watch. Community members must begin to speak out against this type of behavior,” Dr. Ferguson said.
