Medical Equipment valued at USD$17,000 Handed Over to the University Hospital of the West Indies

Medical equipment valued at USD$17, 000 was handed over to the University of the West Indies from proceeds from the Charity Golf Tournament which was held as a fundraiser in conjunction with the Annual Caribbean Neurosciences Congress and Symposium (CANS) earlier this year.

Minister of Health, Dr. Fenton Ferguson noted that this donation is a significant contribution to the hospital and will go a far way to serve the Jamaican population.  Dr. Ferguson was speaking during the handover ceremony held Tuesday, November 03, 2015 at the Mona Visitors Lodge on the University of the West Indies Mona Campus in Kingston.

Dr. Ferguson said, “today’s handover to the University Hospital of the West Indies is a significant contribution that will go afar way to serve the Jamaica population and I want to acknowledge all the sponsors and partners of the annual Charity Golf Tournament who have made the event a great success over the years”

The equipment that was handed over is a Karl Stortz CMAC Video Laryngoscope which is a device used to visualize the vocal cord and allow placement of a breathing tube (endotracheal tube) to help breathing during surgery or to help in lung protection.  The video laryngoscope comes with an image converter and cable to allow projection of images onto a large screen to facilitate teaching.  This is the first such device in Jamaica.

The Annual Caribbean Neurosciences Congress and Symposium (CANS) and Charity Golf Tournament are organized each year by the Caribbean Neurological Association and the Department of Surgery at the University of the West Indies.

CANS will be hosting its 14th annual conference in January 2016.
