Environmental Health Special 2 – Specialist Surveillance (HPC/EH 6) (Vacant)

JOB PURPOSE

The Environmental Health Specialist – Specialist Surveillance (HPC/EH 6) will be primarily responsible for managing the system for the collection, collation, analysis and reporting of data collected on selected class 1 conditions (Vector-borne and Foodborne disease), syndromes (hereafter referred to as Selected Conditions) and tourist establishment from across Jamaica.

 

KEY OUTPUT

• Timely and accurate weekly updates on the status selected conditions.
• Contribution of integrated (environmental and disease) reports on selected conditions at local, national and international levels as appropriate.
• Preparation of relevant sections of documents and reports as required
• To enhance the analysis of tourist establishment data

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS INCLUDES:

• Routine (weekly, monthly, annual) epidemiological analysis and reporting on selected conditions.

• Liaison with environmental health/surveillance staff in communities, health department and hospitals and regional offices across Jamaica to ensure the completeness of reporting of selected conditions.

• Monitoring the surveillance of Hotels and the general epidemiology of food-borne outbreaks in the hospitality industry.

• Monitoring the effectiveness of the surveillance system for selected conditions

• Participation in activities, at the field and national levels, directed at strengthening the integration of environmental health and disease surveillance systems.

• Analyze tourist establishment surveillance data and prepare reports

• Participation in outbreaks investigation

• Planning and executing of data validation exercise and preparing reports on these exercise for selected conditions.

• Participation in the preparation of manuals and protocols for the monitoring of selected conditions.

• Supervision of national level surveillance clerical staff in ensuring the veracity of surveillance data.

• Participation in the planning and implementation of surveillance training with a focus on Vector and Food borne disease.

• Coordination of the collection, submission and reporting of results for appropriate specimens to enable isolation of the causative organism in the occurrences of selected conditions.

• Provision of support to the National Disaster Management Team as required

• Assistance in the preparation of special reports for national, regional and international agencies

• Participation in research activities as required

• Development and maintenance of a strong working relationship with the environmental health unit at the national level to improve the joint analysis and guidance of ensuing actions for the prevention and control of selected vector and food borne conditions.

• Obtaining additional skills/training as needed to improve work quality.

• Performance of any other related duties as assigned by the Medical Epidemiologist, Communicable Disease Surveillance.

 

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Master’s Degree in Public Health
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Science
• Diploma in Public Health Inspection
• Minimum of six (6) years working experience as a Public Health Inspector
• Training in Supervisory Management
