Ministry of Health Investigating Vibrio Specie Identified in Patient

As at June 9, 2017, a patient was readmitted to hospital after recent bowel surgery with fever. Routine investigations identified a bacteria in his blood. Preliminary investigations revealed that the bacteria is a form of Vibrio cholerae and based on the presentation of this illness, it is not consistent with the severe diarrhoeal illness known as cholera.

A sample has been sent to CARHPA for further testing. As a precautionary measure the patient has been isolated and is receiving appropriate medical treatment. The patient’s contacts are well and are being monitored.
