Over $16 Million Worth of Medical Supplies Donated to Ministry of Health PDF Print E-mail

Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Fenton Ferguson has lauded Food for the Poor for its continued contribution to health care in Jamaica at a ceremony yesterday afternoon where the organization handed over $16,623,824 worth of medical equipment and other items to the Ministry of Health. The event took place at Food for the Poor’s head office in Ellerslie Pen, St. Catherine.

The items include four (4) operating theatre lights, two hundred (200) wheelchairs, two (2) stretchers, forty (40) hospital beds and fifty one (51) sofas for the waiting areas of the facilities.

“This donation exemplifies the spirit of philanthropy and a sincere commitment to work in tandem with the Government to help develop the country. It also signifies recognition that putting the nation’s best interest at heart is not a job for the Government alone. I hope that other organizations will use this as an inspiration to get involved and follow suit,” he said.

He said it comes at a time when the Government has been working towards improving the healthcare system by providing additional equipment and supplies to facilities.

“The Equipment Performance Task Force that was put in place by me in January 2012 was charged with the development of a framework for the optimal use of medical equipment and to help to standardize on equipment for use in the health sector. The first set of recommendations for standardization of equipment supported the Ministry’s application to the National Contracts Commission. The NCC has given its approval for X-ray units, patient monitors and autoclaves,” Dr. Ferguson explained.

He added that he was pleased with this achievement and looks forward to other similar approvals as it relates to standards for other equipment in use in health facilities.

In 2012, Food for the Poor donated $3.1 billion worth of healthcare equipment and supplies to health centres and hospitals across the island. This is an increase from the $2.9 billion donated in 2011.
